Apprenticeship Levy Conference

Thursday, 27 Apr 2017, 10:00 - 14:45

1,200 of the largest charities in the UK will be required to pay the Apprenticeship Levy from April 2017, estimated to cost charities £200 million collectively. This does not include the additional costs of developing apprenticeship schemes, becoming registered apprenticeship training providers, or recruiting, paying and managing apprentices.

As the levy can only be spent on training apprentices, many charities are concerned that they will not be able to spend their levy in full. Ultimately employers - including charities - will lose any unspent funds which the government will then redirect to subsidise the cost of apprenticeship training for other employers.

Delegates will gain an overview of how the levy will work and how it might affect your charity, as well as providing practical sessions on how to integrate apprentices into your workforce, and how your charity can become a registered training provider.

This conference is particularly suitable for Finance Directors, CEOs and those with responsibility for HR within your organisation.

Chair's welcome and Introduction to the Apprenticeship Levy

What is the apprenticeship levy and how does it affect charities? Much of the information being provided on the levy is not aimed at charities and this brief introduction aims to raise awareness of the levy and the various implications it will have.
Anjelica Finnegan, Policy and Research Manager, CFG

Preparing for the levy

This session will look at approaches that a charity might take towards embedding apprentices into their charity and considers how teams might share tasks among staff as well as physical and financial resource planning.

Using theoretical examples this session will also explore how a charity could go about employing apprentices and will demonstrate how they can be an asset to a charity.

Stephen Baker and Tom Pearce, Grant Thornton

How to become an accredited provider

Delegates will hear from a speaker who will discuss what is involved in becoming an accredited training provider and if it will work for your charity.

The Apprenticeship Service

To be able to access your levy funds, employers will need to register for the Apprenticeship Service. Employers can check their account balance online as well as decide what apprenticeships they will be running, as well as the number of apprentices and training providers. In this session, learn how to sign up for, and use the service and get around any challenging areas.
