CFG Governance Conference 2018

The charity sector continues to be rocked by repeated failures in governance, as highlighted in recent media reports. It is more important than ever that senior managers and trustees ensure they understand their responsibilities and are following best practice, particularly around their fiduciary duties. Our Governance Conference will provide trustees and charity staff with insights into steps they can take to ensure their organisation is demonstrating good governance, and that their reporting structures are robust and effective. The Conference offers practical guidance on how to develop constructive relationships between the board and charity staff, alongside an update on the latest regulatory frameworks, and this will impact your liability.

Who should attend? Finance Managers and Finance Directors who are stepping in to the role of the Company Secretary, Chief Executives who want to refresh their knowledge of internal governance, and Trustees who want to understand the responsibility of the Company Secretary and Finance Directors.

Introduction to the Charity Commission and Companies House
This opening session will look at what the role of the company secretary, within a charity and what reporting and disclosures they need to undertake, looking at what FD’s stepping into this role need to think about. It will identify what the main responsibilities of the role are and what liabilities the Company Secretary has.

Managing a trading company
This presentation explores when to consider setting up a trading company and the governance around financial management under this structure, alongside the legal requirements.

Policies and legal responsibilities
This session will explore due diligence within a charity, looking at the legal and policy requirements of the Company Secretary and how to develop and review these policies, such as   data protection or health and safety.

Finance and Audit Committee
This session will look at when you make the decision to separate finance and audit as a separate committee, and how to structure and run it effectively to ensure it is providing maximum support to the main board.

How can finance staff help trustees increase their financial confidence? This session will offer tips and tools to help you build finance knowledge within your trustee board, helping them understand financial information so that they can make informed financial decisions and effectively contribute to your charity’s financial strategy.

Dealing with problems within the Board
This session will offer insight into how to tackle common problems that arise with the board such as personality clashes, power struggles and lack of engagement. Attendees will have the chance to discuss their problems with peers and find solutions to common problems.

Terms and Conditions:

Written notice of cancellations up to 21 days before an event will incur a 25% administration fee. After this time period, a 100% cancellation charge will apply. Substitutions (i.e. name changes) for the course booked can be made free of charge.

CFG reserves the right to cancel any event two weeks prior to the event date. You will be entitled to a full refund or given the opportunity to transfer to an alternative date. However we regret that we cannot refund any travel or accommodation costs incurred by delegates. CFG accepts no liability if an event is cancelled or postponed for reasons beyond our reasonable control resulting from an act of God, governmental regulation, fire, war, terrorist activity or civil commotion.

It may be necessary for reasons beyond our control to change the date, time or the venue at any time prior to the event date. If this occurs you will be informed of changes and given the opportunity to cancel or transfer to an alternative date.

CFG reserves the right to amend the content of the programme or the speakers where necessary without consulting booked delegates.
