VAT & Tax Conference

VAT is a complicated area at the best of times and can be particularly complex for charitable organisations. In addition, those charities engaging in additional trading through trading subsidiary may be subject to taxation which brings with itself a whole new set of rules and complications.

This conference will offer updates for those already working with VAT and tax, as well as providing introductory information, offering tips for optimising your tax recovery and registering and administration of VAT and tax.

Case Study: VAT and The Fifth Trust – a quarter of a million pounds in question

The Fifth Trust provides a safe, dignified and fulfilling experience for our students – but we continually strive to make what we do even better. Our skills centre in Barham reached the end of its usable life so we decided to redevelop it. The cost of the redevelopment is c£2m including VAT of c£280k. Our paid advisors specified that the VAT incurred would not be recoverable. Our trustees disagreed. Our new advisors worked with us to restructure our operation and recover most of the VAT incurred. This meant we could start our redevelopment which was completed June 2022.
