Join us for the next step in your financial leadership journey with our flagship training course, Inspiring Financial Leadership, beginning this October.

We’re passionate about championing the integral place of the charity finance professional and the role and impact you have within your organisation.

Wherever you are in your career, this training course will help you step outside the box, rethink the traditional role of the finance professional, and empower you with tools and expertise.

About IFL

This highly popular course runs as a series of online seminars, in collaboration between Charity Finance Group, Centre for Charity Effectiveness and Sayer Vincent. The course combines the latest leadership models with practical advice and support through interactive sessions, discussions and individual coaching.

The course is focused on the role of the charity finance professional, drawing on leadership research and the challenges that finance professionals face. The course is highly interactive using a mix of practical experience, research and best practice. Attendees gain the skills and expertise to take them to the next stage of their leadership journey and progress in their career.

The course will be ran online to optimise accessibility.

Bursary scheme and discounts

CFG is pleased to once again offer a bursary scheme this year. We have two bursaries available, a bursary available for under-represented groups and a bursary available to BAME led finance teams and/or organisations who are not CFG members.

Speakers

Judith Miller, Partner & IFL Course Director, Sayer Vincent

Judith became a partner at Sayer Vincent in 2006. Before joining the firm, she trained as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG, working for them in the UK and in Germany. She is a Fellow of the ICAEW and holds a Diploma in Charity Accounting. Sayer Vincent works exclusively with registered charities and other social purpose organisations.

 

As well as handling a portfolio of charity audit clients (internal and external), Judith leads reviews of governance, organisational and team structures, which includes the efficiency and effectiveness of support functions. Judith's work reflects our emphasis on the "people factors". She aims to bring complex technical matters to life, making them easily accessible. Judith is an experienced trainer and facilitator and designs bespoke development days, as well as speaking at conferences and leading seminars.

 

Judith has been a trustee for over 15 years. Here appointments included sitting on the board of a  corporate foundation and a charity which provided care to people with learning disabilities. She is currently a trustee and treasurer of a sector infrastructure body.

Maggie Smith, Coach & IFL Course Director, Centre for Charity Effectiveness (CCE)

Maggie Smith is a coach and facilitator who engages in one to one and team coaching and designs and delivers open and tailored in-house leadership programmes.

She is a consultant with the CCE, the Institute of Employment Studies, The Work Foundation, and Leadership Works. Maggie is also a fellow of the Centre for Progressive Leadership at London Metropolitan University.

Maggie works with public, voluntary and private sector organisations including the Metropolitan Police Service (with whom she trained as a solutions focus coach), Prospect, Surrey Police, Shepherds Bush Housing Group, Ipsos-Mori, DEFRA, the Society and College of Radiographers, National Union of Students, Keniston Housing and Midland Heart.

With a couple of colleagues she’s founded Towards Outstanding Leadership and alumni from those leadership programmes come from the Home Office, the Department for Transport, the Cabinet Office, South Hook Gas, the FSCS, Accord Housing Group, Ipsos-MORI the Society and College of Radiographers and Plan International. She holds a diploma in Executive Coaching from the Academy of Executive Coaching which is accredited by the International Coach Federation (of which she is a member), the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and Middlesex University.

Previously, Maggie worked at The Work Foundation in the leadership programme and as part of the Advocacy team. As Head of Events she was a lead on their high profile party conference fringe programmes and organised events for speakers including Tony Blair whilst Prime Minister, Greg Dyke, former Director General of the BBC and Sir Terry Leahy, ex-CEO of Tesco plc. This follows many years in management positions in the events and hotel industries where she specialised in project management and leading diverse teams.

In her spare time she is studying Psychology with the Open University and has recently completed a foundation programme in positive psychology.

Simon Hopkins, Director of Resources, Blind Veterans UK

Simon joined Blind Veterans UK in 2019 after holding a variety of roles in the third sector, including a spell as CEO for Turn2us and finance director at BHF. Simon started his career in finance and subsequently held a series of senior financial positions in commerce, specialising in financial strategy, commercial finance and contract compliance as well as related areas, such as business development and service management. Simon publishes and speaks regularly on financial sustainability, leadership and governance and lives with his family in Surrey.

Joyce Materego, Director of Finance and Resources, SignHealth

Caron Bradshaw OBE, Chief Executive, Charity Finance Group

Caron joined CFG in 2010 from the ICAEW where she was Head of the Charity and Voluntary Sector. In addition to supporting a number of small charities and community organisations Caron has been a member of the NCVO’s National Assembly and the Charities SORP Committee, has sat on a number of government working parties, is a member of the Church of England Pension Board’s Audit and Risk Committee, and is Chair of the Board of the Directory of Social Change (and her local hockey club). She was named in the top 30 UK social influences in Risk, Compliance and Regtech 2017.

Caron is a trained Barrister and has a wide array of experience across charity, regulation/law, policy, member support, and professional ethics. In 2015 she was named Charity Principal of the Year at the Charity Times Awards. In 2016 she received the Association Excellence Award for Leadership. Caron is an avidly ‘social’ CEO and was been named in the top 30 social CEOs in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Programme
Module One

Leadership from the finance function

This session focuses on the principles and behavioural attributes associated with inspiring financial leadership, and goes beyond the traditional functional role of a finance leader. What are the particular challenges in moving the finance function to a key decision maker and business partner in an organisation, and how can you overcome them?

Module Two

Coaching for empowerment

What are the skills you need to develop staff in the finance team to act as agents for powerful, collaborative and innovative change, with the ability to question and consider the shifting environment? We will draw distinctions between coaching and mentoring and introduce a simple and powerful model that will equip you to encourage empowerment of individuals in your organisation.

Module Three

Vision and Culture

Finance leaders can play a vital role in contributing to the organisation’s vision and culture by creating a sustainable financial framework to deliver the charity’s vision and purpose. We will talk about how the finance function can influence the direction of travel and of how finance uses its tools and techniques to successfully implement strategy as well as contributing to building the organisational culture inculcating one of learning rather than of blame. We’ll explore how you can evolve as an organisational leader and engage your colleagues beyond finance.

Module Four

Leading Change

The role of finance leaders in change is key. This session will focus on the range of possible responses to change and discuss practical tools for building trusting relationships, in order to develop the capacity and capability within the organisation to meet its strategic objectives and purpose.

Module Five

Communication

Working with colleagues across the organisation is a key part of the finance leader’s role. Presenting technical information to non-experts in a way that can guide their decision making and fully engage them with the process of business development is essential. We will consider a range of communication skills and explore how to use them with internal and external stakeholders and create action plans to build more fruitful relationships.

Module Six

Motivating self and others

This session explores how to frame our own thinking into a positive mode and to be aware of and able to consider the impact of assumptions on our behaviours. We will consider some of our own personal ‘drivers’ in terms of motivation and ways to offer motivational ‘strokes’ in our interactions with colleagues at work. The session will be a mix of raising personal awareness and practical ways to apply this to developing our relationships with others

Module Seven

Wellbeing and resilience

Balancing the competing demands and pressures of your responsibilities, stakeholder relationships and team is a real challenge for finance leaders. Being well is crucial for more than one reason – for you as an individual; in order to be an authentic advocate for wellbeing in the workplace; and, so you can empower your team in a healthy way, with positive energy and ethos. This session will explore the steps you can take to manage your own health, as well as how you can support your teams.

Module Eight

Leading and influencing high performing teams

The final module will share best practice in leading a high performing team, look at the stages of team development and help participants assess where they are at currently. We will explore the importance of being a constructive team member of an organisational Leadership team and consider the relationship with Trustees drawing on real case study material. We will also explore how to manage and influence upwards.
