SORP development 2025

What is the Charities SORP and SORP consultation?

The Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) sets out requirements and recommendations on financial accounting and reporting for charitable entities.

In 2025, the Charities SORP will be updated following public consultation and approval by the Financial Reporting Council (FRC). It is expected to come into effect from 1 January 2026.

The SORP-making body (consisting of the charity regulators of the UK and Republic of Ireland) is leading the development. Below is the published timeline:

  • March 2025: public consultation will open and will run for 12 weeks.
  • June-July 2025: consultation responses will be reviewed and the SORP will be updated as necessary.
  • August to September 2025: FRC to approve the final version.
  • 1 January 2026: Third edition of the SORP comes into effect.

More information can be found on the SORP-making body’s website.

How is CFG responding?

As the go-to body for charity finance, and having been instrumental in the formation of the original SORP.

During the consultation phase

CFG will be:

  • Inviting feedback during the consultation phase that will be collated and used to shape CFG’s response to the consultation.
  • Engaging with charities, partners and other interested parties and experts through a series of consultation meetings and roundtables, convened by CFG.
  • Engaging with stakeholders through their own events and meetings, to share CFG’s insights and updates.
  • Sharing other opportunities to engage in the development process, for example, through surveys.

Following the publication of the revised SORP

CFG will be:

  • Working with stakeholders to launch a suite of learning resources, including training events and information packs.
