Aligning your budgets to your purpose

As a charity finance professional, you want to be sure that your charity’s resources are being used in the best way to deliver for its beneficiaries. This has never been more important than now, when rising costs and increased income volatility mean that the sector must increasingly do more with less. A change in your budgeting methodology could be a big step on the road to increased alignment between budgets and purpose.

This workshop will cover Shelter’s outcomes-based budgeting approach for the 2022-25 strategic period, which started with our strategic outcomes, established the activities which would deliver them, and then costed those activities up. You will hear our learnings from this experience and get an opportunity to discuss budgeting methodologies with your peers in the sector.

By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the benefits and potential drawbacks of moving away from the usual incremental approach to budgeting towards a more outcomes-based approach.
  • Begin planning what a change in budgeting methodology might look like for you.
