CFG is changing its objects to broaden its reach
Back in May I mentioned in a previous post that CFG was in the process of amending our memorandum and articles of association and changing our objects in order to ensure that we are fit for the future and able to adapt to a changing environment. I am now going to tell you all about the changes we are proposing
I can quickly skate over the memorandum and articles of association. Changes there are to tidy the administrative bits of what we do and to tighten up some language to reflect how we operate. Nothing earth shattering but a good idea to refresh the content whilst we’re there – consider it the lick of paint on the new front door!
However, the part of the journey I want to outline in much more detail is the changes to our objects. Previously our objects were rather general. In particular, “to advance the education in and promote the improved standards of management in charities” was limiting in terms of our audience, because the vehicles through which social change is now delivered are far wider than registered charities.
We have received Charity Commission consent for amendments to our objects which will not only broaden the potential activities we can undertake, but will also enable us to reach out to a wider range of public benefit organisations. We will be asking you, our members, to confirm you are happy with the following wording: 3. The Group’s objects (“the Objects”) are for the benefit of the public to: 3.1. advance education in public benefit organisations; 3.2. promote the efficiency and effectiveness (including financial management) of public benefit organisations and in particular by: a) undertaking research to identify needs and establishing projects or policies to address those needs; b) providing training, conferences and seminars; c) building the capacity of (including the effective use of resources) and enabling the exchange of information and best practice amongst finance advisers and public benefit organisations; d) the provision of a pro-active and accessible service offering practical help, advice and support; e) acting as a representative and intermediary for public benefit organisations, including in relation to government and other agencies and bodies; f) providing information to the press and the public in respect of the operation of or problems encountered by public benefit organisations. (“public benefit organisations” means charities (including their wholly owned subsidiaries), voluntary organisations, co-operatives, mutuals and other forms of social enterprises established for public and community benefit).
We believe these changes will help us reach out beyond our borders to form more relationships with others delivering support, education and advice which drives up standards across the sector. It will also help us directly support a broader range of members in a wider range of differently structured social organisations. Look out for the communications in due course in order to have your say, but in the meantime, as always, I am keen to hear what you think.
