Meet our Annual Conference sponsors... HW Fisher

We talk to Carol Rudge from HW Fisher about what this year’s CFG Annual Conference theme – Strong Foundations, Lasting Impact – means to her, and why this is a big year for charity finance.

Hi Carol! As Lead Sponsor of CFG’s Annual Conference, you’ll be presenting as well as meeting attendees on HW Fisher’s exhibition stand. What does this year’s theme mean to you personally and as a sector leader?

This year’s theme, Strong Foundations, Lasting Impact, to me, is all about the vital role each of us plays in building resilience within our organisations.

In a time of big challenges across the wider macro environment and even bigger expectations and pressures put on charities as a result, getting the basics right — strong governance, staying connected to your community, and smart planning — really matters.

In today’s climate, it’s not just about surviving — it’s about building strategies that support long-term resilience as well as staying true to the charity’s mission.

These feel like uncertain and difficult times for many. It’s a big question, but what three things can charities do now to ensure they have strong foundations and can continue to deliver impact for their communities?

You're absolutely right — these are complex and challenging times, and many charities are feeling the strain. I think if I go back to what I’ve said previously taking each one and looking at them practically, it may help:

  1. Revisit your financial strategy with realism and purpose
In times of uncertainty, clarity is power. Take a hard look at your income streams, reserves, and cost base to plan strategically. Build in flexibility, consider scenario planning, and align financial decisions with your core mission.
  2. Invest in your people and governance
Strong foundations are built by strong teams. Prioritise staff wellbeing, especially during difficult, pressurised times, support your finance and leadership teams, and ensure trustees are equipped to challenge and support in equal measure.
  3. Stay connected to your community and transparent with stakeholders
Keep listening to your beneficiaries, funders, and supporters. Be open about challenges, and clear about the impact you’re aiming for. Strong relationships, built on transparency and accountability, are a foundation that lasts.

That's brilliant advice, thank you! Will you be touching on these ideas in your presentation to CFG's Annual Conference?

Our session is on the topic of resilience which we felt would be extremely pertinent this year. We will begin by examining resilience at the individual level. How do we ensure that our consistent performers are supported, and how can leaders empower their teams to build resilience in the face of challenges?

Shifting to an organisational perspective, we’ll explore how to embed resilience within systems and structures. Together, we will reflect on strategies that help individuals and organisations thrive during times of adversity. So it should be a really great session!

Have you spotted any other highlights or must-attend sessions on this year’s programme?

Clearly there is a lot of information around the new SORP at the moment and as a long standing member of the Charity SORP Committee, and we are talking about this a lot with our clients and contacts (as well as supporting CFG with resources). So the SORP session will be a good one for charities, to help ensure they are up to speed and putting themselves in the best light to achieve a successful implementation.

Finally, what do you most look forward to about CFG’s Annual Conference each year?

I have been attending the conference for many, many years and always look forward to the hustle and bustle that it brings in terms of seeing our clients, meeting many new contacts, and listening to the fabulous line up of speakers.

In a world of hybrid working, more so now than ever, it’s great to see people face to face for a good chat about what’s going on in the charity world.

Thank you for your time, Carol! We look forward to seeing you and the team there!
